We have been helping BBC Radio 1 get closer to its listeners for the past nine years. In that time we’ve branded several large-scale music events, spanning digital, motion and print design.
Hackney 2012 branding and on-site design
When the BBC announced its biggest ever musical event we were as excited as anyone. We’d worked together on previous ‘Big Weekends’, but the London 2012 warm-up party would be the biggest yet, with 100,000 revellers attending over two days.
Setting the stage
Alongside UK & international musical artists, there was much more to showcase. Key to the wider community involvement was BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra’s Academy, a series of workshops offering advice to young people from Hackney and East London. The challenge would be to represent every aspect of the event and appeal to all the stakeholders, from the BBC network brands to Hackney Council.
Making it happen
The first taster of the branding was an event microsite, and the brief here was simple – make it epic! We developed a graphic identity, with the London skyline providing context and a ‘larger than life’ tone. The styling was applied across various materials and merchandise.
Then, working closely with the BBC and their production team, we created artwork for the on-site graphics. The imposing main stage stood proud at 17m tall, towering over 48-sheets, signage and wayfinding – and even the huge 3D type which was shared on social channels around the world.
98% of 15–24 year olds in the UK witnessed the campaign, pushing Radio 1’s Twitter following up by 400% and Facebook fans to 2.3 million.

BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend
After the success of Hackney 2012, Studio Output refreshed the branding for the 2013 Big Weekend in Derry~Londonderry. For the first time the event would span three days, bringing world-class acts like Calvin Harris, Dizzee Rascal and Biffy Clyro together with the brightest up & coming talent.
The logo lock-up built on Hackney 2012 – and Radio 1’s existing pulse device – with epic typography and a laser sunset colour palette. In collaboration with our partners at Found, we created an animated sting, bringing the logo to life for the TV trail teasing the event.
BBC Radio 1’s Teen Awards recognises heroes in everyday and celebrity life. Nominations from all over the UK are received for 12–17 year-old siblings, carers, fundraisers – or just great mates – who have done something truly out of the ordinary.
We refreshed the Teen Awards identity and visual language, developing Radio 1’s brand pulse into a refracting kaleidoscope of gemstone patterns. This became the basis of the new logo lock-up, providing the youthful bling that was the backdrop to the event.
