Out & about.
The BBC's coverage of the Glastonbury Festival is an iconic event in the annual programming schedule. Given the festival's growth and evolution, and the increase in demand for coverage, it was felt that this year the visual identity needed refreshing.
The brief focused on recognising and connecting with new audiences without alienating the faithful funseekers. Based on bigger and better shows and greater mainstream appeal to audiences, this was summed up with the instruction: "think Beyoncé!"
We began by tweaking the existing typography for greater legibility, then creating a new representation of the pyramid through the use of dynamic light effects. The effect is like standing in front of the main stage, caught in the glare of either summer sunlight or phazing lightwalls.
Front of mind was the need to bring the branding to life on-screen, and we worked closely with FOUND, our moving image partners, to create the animated sting. The reveal builds to a crescendo of triangular light that defines the symbolic nature of the Pyramid Stage.
We also applied the idea of layered light to the relevant BBC webpage background and rolled out the visual identity across extra promotional materials.

We're very pleased to announce that Studio Output has acquired moving image studio The Found Collective. The result of six months' negotiation, the deal was reported in Design Week recently.
As you've probably seen the agencies have collaborated extensively over the past two years and we both feel there's an amazing amount of synergy between us.
Found have a great reputation for innovation and high-concept work, not only on screen, but also through projection mapping and other experiential projects. They also bring an exciting portfolio of work covering live action, animation and creative technology.
The Found Collective will keep their identity, now simply known as 'Found', and will continue working from their Hoxton studio, retaining all existing staff. We have ambitious growth plans over the next 12 months and are announcing two new roles. If you'd like to help us spread the word, here are the ads for Senior Motion Designer and a Business Development Manager.
Here are a couple of quotes about the deal:
Ian Hambleton, Partner and Creative Director of Studio Output: "We're seeing video and motion as the new digital boom as clients require online content, brand films, virals, TV & cinema advertising or product demos. With the introduction of superfast broadband and 4G this trend is only going to continue. The deal makes total sense, there's lots of creative synergy between the two studios, we get on well with the guys and we've built up a really strong working relationship, which this move will cement. It's certainly exciting for us, agencies often talk about strategic relationships or partnering, but it's great to be able to offer this as one company."
Mike Sharpe, MD of The Found Collective: "We're all very excited about the new venture. We've always had a great relationship with the team at Studio Output and over the past few years have created some groundbreaking work together. To be fully integrated into their business gives us great strength as our skills as a motion company come together with their creative agency muscle. There are some very exciting times ahead."
