I got into design through a love of record sleeve artwork and flyers. I really wanted to work within design and music somehow, and did manage a couple of record sleeves before realising I probably wasn’t going to make a career in that.
I love how powerful creativity can be. Good design and creative thinking can solve complex problems, change behaviour and create real, meaningful impact for people.
I moved into working in branding through DesignStudio. It was much smaller then, but working on big rebrands and travelling all over the world. It was an incredibly formative part of my career, and really opened up my way of thinking and my approach.
Since then I’ve worked largely independently, either for agencies or running my studio. Working for yourself is incredibly liberating and fulfilling, but it can be stressful too. It can feel all-consuming when work and life are so closely linked.
I’ve definitely learnt by doing, fucking up, watching others, and improving! So I would probably just tell myself to do more of that. Show up and put yourself out there.
Make it mean something.
Be open and adaptable.
Always push for unfamiliarity.
But mostly, enjoy it! It shows.
The only other cities I’ve worked are Sydney and San Francisco, but the thing I missed most about London is the sense of humour.
